Scaling & Root Planing

Considered the gold standard of gum disease therapy, scaling and root planing allows our team to target the source of the infection directly. First comes scaling, during which we break up any plaque and tartar deposits that have built up around your gumline. Next comes root planing, wherein we carefully smooth down your teeth’s roots. This treatment greatly reduces your risk of future gum disease, as plaque is less likely to gather on smooth surfaces.

Antibiotic Therapy

To supplement scaling and root planing, we may apply a topical antibiotic to your gums. Immediately after being placed, the medicine begins to destroy any lingering bacteria, but it also continues to spread to even the deepest pockets of your gums over the next few days or weeks, reaching areas that even our advanced instruments cannot. If we deem it necessary, we may also prescribe a course of oral antibiotics.
